Frequently Asked Questions

Chesapeake Vital Care FAQs

What is home infusion therapy?

Home infusion therapy involves administering medications or nutrients through a needle or catheter in the comfort of a patient’s home. It is a safe, effective alternative to inpatient care for many chronic and acute conditions.

Who qualifies for home infusion services?

Patients who are medically stable, have a safe home environment, and require therapies that can be safely administered outside of a hospital setting may qualify. A physician referral and clinical review help determine eligibility.

What types of medications can be infused at home?

Patra Care provides a wide range of therapies including IV antibiotics, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), immunoglobulin (IVIG/SCIG), biologics, hydration, and specialty medications for neurological, autoimmune, and oncology-related conditions.

Is home infusion therapy safe?

Yes. Our licensed nurses follow strict clinical protocols, use sterile equipment, and provide training to patients and caregivers. We also offer 24/7 support in case of complications or emergencies.

Who administers the infusions?

Depending on the therapy, infusions are administered by a registered nurse, or patients may be trained to self-administer certain medications like SCIG or enteral feedings.

Will my insurance cover home infusion therapy?

In most cases, yes. We work with private insurers, Medicare, Medicaid, and the VA. Our intake team verifies coverage and obtains any required prior authorizations before therapy begins.

How is medication delivered to my home?

Medications, supplies, and equipment are shipped directly to your home on a regular schedule. We coordinate delivery to ensure you always have what you need when you need it.

What happens if I miss a dose or have a reaction?

If you miss a dose, experience side effects, or feel unwell during therapy, call our 24/7 clinical support line. We’ll guide you on what to do and notify your provider if needed.

Can I travel while receiving infusion therapy?

In some cases, yes. For therapies like SCIG or TPN, patients may travel with portable equipment and medication. We’ll help plan your travel and ensure you have the supplies and instructions you need.

How are emergency situations handled at home?

All patients are provided with detailed emergency instructions and support numbers. Our team is available 24/7 to assist and, if necessary, coordinate with emergency services.

How soon can I start therapy after referral?

In most cases, within 24–72 hours. Once we receive a referral and insurance authorization, we coordinate with your provider, schedule a nurse, and deliver supplies.
